![]() ![]() Not really because I think, if you look back before I got into the NFL, I think they played fewer games, 14 or 12, maybe. Los Angeles Rams star wide receiver Cooper Kupp said the other day, essentially, records broken with the newly expanded season should have an asterisk. It was sometimes a distraction, but some of it was a lot of fun pretending like I sang on a Huey Lewis album, doing Saturday Night Live with Walter Payton, meeting my wife through a commercial. ![]() Every now and then he would pull me in, give me a shake and kick me back out the door. ( Laughs.) But then I got the ole ruler smacked on my hands occasionally by Bill Walsh, reminding me that if you want to keep doing those things, you better be ready for the season. What was it like being among the first NFL stars who transcended the game? More than just trading cards and magazine covers, your face was on Starting Lineup action figures, video games, tackling dummies pillows, and then you even did SNL. Otherwise, it was tough watching, going through it again and living it again puts the same temperament in your mind. I had to watch them once to say, “Yes, they look great,” and move forward. I didn’t watch the episodes over and over. So going back and looking at this was hard. This is probably the toughest thing because I don’t live in my past. Sounds like it was pretty tough revisiting that time, those legendary glory days. And what I went through - I think people will be shocked by some of the things that happened. I learned the best preparation when I got to the 49ers with Bill Walsh.Īnd then you get to San Francisco - you’ve won four Super Bowls, two in a row and about to be a third in a row - I got injured and then the next thing you know, I won’t get a chance to play again, and I get traded to Kansas City. You never stop believing in yourself and always be prepared. If you want something bad enough, you can’t give up at it. I think the biggest thing about coming out of here is if you want something bad enough, you just never quit. What do you hope fans will ultimately come away with from the Cool Under Pressure series? The 65-year-old Pro Football Hall of Famer, who notes he could only watch the series a single time to give a final OK, told The Hollywood Reporter some viewers may even be “shocked” by what they will learn. Nevertheless a very good/well produced sports doc series that I will probably watch again.John Wick 'Continental' Trailer Reveals Mel Gibson's Mysterious VillainĬool Under Pressure features many tales about the San Francisco 49ers (then Kansas City Chiefs) star quarterback that most people don’t know. ![]() A storybook ending would have been for him to win a record breaking 5th SB with KC. Though it was a shame having to retire in '94, for that team finished 1st overall the following season (13-3 record + 7 pro bowlers). Playing his final 2 seasons with Marcus at KC (whom had similar issues with Al Davis) must have been a nice treat for both of them. They morally owed him that, but instead sat him for an entire year (amidst a cloud of ongoing tension). Nevertheless, if Joe was not content playing 2nd string upon his '91 injury recovery (age 36 - past his prime), the 49ers should have traded him immediately.and to a division contender. Sometimes it can work, sometimes it can backfire. Unthinkable!! These kinds of things can happen whenever coaches put their shrink hats on with their players. Barring injury, benching a healthy Joe Montana would be like benching Gretzky or Jordan in favor of another player. One main aspect of the story was the Montana vs Young debacle. Joe is also 1 of only 3 QB's with 4 or more SB's (Bradshaw (4) and Brady (7) being the only others). This of course was accomplished prior to the modern era of protected QB's (whom occupy 8 of the top 10 slots). Montana's passing yardage is surprisingly low on the all-time list (#21), particularly compared to his 80's counterparts (Marino #7 and Elway #11), but he is #8 for all time comp% and #6 for overall passer rating. I'm a stats guy, so I always have several wiki pages open on my computer whenever watching any of these sports docs. It is basically like watching a long episode of A Football Life.which I thoroughly enjoy. Living a mostly storied life (which is also fun to watch), Montana's career also contained enough drama and struggles to comfortably pull it off. There aren't too many people in all of sports that could justify making a 5 hour documentary of their career. ![]()
